Join us for a fascinating museum tour to learn about Norway's relationship with the sea over thousands of years, richly illustrated by beautiful models, full - size boats, archaeological finds and interesting artefacts.

Visit one of Norway’s greatest maritime museums

The Bergen Maritime Museum gives insight into Norwegian seafaring history and the evolution of seafaring from the earliest times until the present day. The exhibitions showcase items related to seafaring and life at sea, ship models of utmost quality, paintings and marine-archaeological findings. The museum's collections have local roots, but since Bergen has always been one of the country’s greatest maritime cities, they also provide a picture of our national maritime history.

Since 1962, the Bergen Maritime Museum has been located ina beautiful building with a distinctive character, drawn by the famous Bergen architect Per Grieg. This is an architectural gem in stone and glass, nicely situated in a peaceful neighbourhood at the University Campus in Bergen. Nearby, you will find several exciting museums, parks and cafes.

We recommend our guests to watch the spectacular movie ’The Burned Ship‘ whichdeals with the discovery of a Viking Age funeral in western Norway. The film is produced by the local company Arkikon (duration 22 min, subtitles in English).

Museum shop and refreshments.

If you want to draw some sketches while visiting, the necessary equipment can be borrowed at the museum. Or maybe you want to go hunting for ‘ship-rats’?

How to find the museum (by foot):
From the city center(approx. 15 min). Walk up the stairs to the St John's Church. The museum is located approx. 150 m behind the church. Go to the left of the church, approx. 50 m along the main road. Then turn right onto the gravel walkway. Walk100 meters, the museum is the building with the natural stone facade.
