HALLINGDAL MUSEUM, NESBYEN
One of Norway's oldest open air museums!

Hallingdal folk museum was established in 1899 as one of the first open air museums in Norway. It comprises 29 buildings and has a collection of 11,000 objects that depict history from the middle ages until the 20th century. There is also a photo archive.

Most of the buildings are from Hallingdal and depict rural culture and industry through the ages. "Stavloftet", from around 1340, is one of Norway's oldest non-church buildings. Another unusual building is the emigrants' house from North Dakota.

A wide range of activities and events
The museum offers changing exhibitions, a permanent costume exhibition, activity days, story-telling theatre and the activity area "energy sources in old rural societies". There is also a small log-driving station where children accompanied by adults can drive small logs down "the river". "In the Footsteps of Gude" is a path through old Nes and up alongside the waterfalls in the museum grounds. This is where the artist Hans Gude found many of his motifs.

Regular events at the museum include Winter's Day, "Growth of the Soil" and Christmas at the Museum. The museum shop has a good assortment of gifts, books and handicraft. Groups can book guided tours outside normal opening hours, all year round.
