Difficulty: moderate; suitable for older children with cycling experience
Distance: 16,5 km
Elevation gain: approx. 460 meters
Directions:
From the E16 in Vang, exit towards Helin (toll road) and drive all the way to Grøvstølen at the northern end of the lake where there are a few spots to park the car.
From there, follow the cycling signs “Smådalsrunden” southwards along the road on the western shore of the lake. After approx. 3 km the road splits up and you keep right uphill for the 4 km climb up to 1200 meters. The view is spectacular! At the intersection on the mountain plateau, keep to the right towards Nørdre Smådalen and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. You will now cycle around the north-western end of Smådalsfjellet, with the mountain Grindane on your left. The last 2 km on the return to Grøvstølen are a very steep downhill run; be careful to use your brakes!
Tips:
* The circuit is signed in both directions, however we recommend cycling it clockwise as discribed.
* From Smådalsfjellet, you can put down your bike for an easy walk (no path) approx. 1.5 km southwards on the flat plateau to the large boulder “Hallingsteinen”.
* It’s a 3-hours hike (return) to the summit of Grindane from the signpost at the trailhead north-west of Smådalsfjellet.
