Snowshoe trip in Nordfjord

Have you little interest in waxing your skis and dread having to ski downhill? In that case, snowshoes may be a good alternative – they have studs everywhere! Snowshoeing is easy to learn and a great social activity for family and friends.

A trip in snowshoes is a wonderful winter activity that gives you a unique opportunity to experience nature at close hand. You can get around anywhere in modern and light snowshoes, through just about any terrain and snow conditions. Walking with snowshoes is easy to learn and is a great way to exercise the whole body.

If you don't fancy a trip to one of the highest mountain summits, take your family on a snowshoe trip to the special cabins that are situated in each municipality. The cabins are known as day-trip cabins and originated from a slightly crazy idea in the former Sogn og Fjordane County council in 2016. The cabins are now well-known landmarks and popular destinations in the whole of Vestland county. Understandably, the cabins are popular and accessible destinations for families with children and are often situated in places with lovely views. The cabins are a great place to seek shelter, eat you packed lunch, and read the children's books on offer. Many of the cabins also have a fire pit and toilet nearby. It’s fabulous to visit the many summer pasture farms found in mid and inner Nordfjord, which are often situated 400 to 600 meters above sea level. The views from most of the farms are tremendous. Please be aware that there are rarely good snow conditions on the coast of Nordfjord.

Borrow/rent snowshoes:
Please contact BUA in Stryn, Gloppen, Stad (Nordfjordeid and Selje) and Bremanger. BUA lends a lot of different outdoor and leisure equipment completely free of charge for up to a week, so it's worth checking if they have snowshoes you can borrow. Please note that BUA in Selje and Bremanger probably do not have snowshoes available, as the snow rarely settles for long on the coast.
