Geilo is built on culture and traditions. Experience Geilo like it was in the 17. century, see grand churches or visit one of Geilo’s knife and tool producers. You can either take a little walk in Geilo, or drive around the municipality to see more of the attractions Geilo and the surroundings has to offer.
The first settlers came to Geilo already around year 0. They were huntsmen, fishermen and traders. Today you can visit Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park and see burial mounds and coal pits from this period.
The first tourist, the English Lord Garvagh, visited Geilo and the areas around the Hallingskarvet mountain as early as 1867. Later, in 1880, his son was permitted to build the well-known Lordehytta cabin in Folarskaret on Hallingskarvet. Walk or ski around the scenic lake Ustedalsfjorden and learn more about Geilo's history. The hike is around 10 kilometres and is easily accessible for you with normal hiking skills. In summer time make sure to taste local traditional food at the outdoor cafe at Geilojordet after your trip. The children will love meeting the goats and hens which live there during the summer time.
