Head west of Oslo to the Brunlanes peninsula, Stavern, and Larvik for a weekend, day trip, or a few days. Visit picturesque coastal towns, eat fresh seafood, and explore Odd Nerdrum's renowned artwork.
Getaway west of Oslo
Discover the Brunlanes peninsula, Stavern,
and Larvik on a round trip
Just about two hours west of Oslo by car, you'll enter the charming southern part of Vestfold, also known as the sunshine coast.
Enjoy beaches, museums, farm shops, coastal nature walks and delicious fresh seafood!
Not to mention all the different farm shops in the area, where you'll find high quality homemade products and be met by the smell of freshly baked buns. There are also plenty of campsites if you want to stay for longer and enjoy lazy days by the sea. New adventures are just around the corner, so bring loved ones, friends, family, or yourself to this beautiful part of Norway.
Seaside escape
Drive for about two hours from Oslo to Helgeroa on the Brunlanes coast. This cosy little village is right by the sea and it's a great place to start your getaway.
If you fancy a swim, there are plenty of great beaches to choose from. Maybe you'll even see one of the famous sunsets if you stay until the evening.
Helgeroa is known for its laid-back atmosphere and rich maritime history. Try some fresh seafood, go island hopping, or start walking along the 35-kilometer-long coastal path that leads all the way to Stavern. It's also possible to walk along smaller sections of the path.
Just a five minute drive from Helgeroa will take you to Lillavendel, a farm shop and café that's definitely worth a visit!

Lillavendel is an experience in itself. Enjoy a vibrant and tasty afternoon tea, or freshly baked goods such as cinnamon buns and sandwiches. When you feel full, there are some furry friends that would also like a snack. Visit the fluffy alpacas and feed them or take them on a little walk.
Then before you leave, don't forget to peruse the shelves in the shop behind the café. Here you'll find handmade soaps and candles that smell divine.
From there, it's a 10-minute drive to Mølen. It's Norway's largest pebble beach and a part of Vestfoldraet, which is terrain that's left behind from the most recent Ice Age. It became a UNESCO Geopark Area in 2008 and is great for walks by the sea.
Then you can either follow the coastline on a half-hour walk or drive for about 10 minutes to Nevlunghavn. Stop for a meal or spend the night at Nevlunghavn Gjestgiveri. This historic hotel takes you right back to 1920 with it's thoroughly executed style and interior.
Being close to the sea has its perks, as Nevlunghavn Gjestgiveri is a great place to enjoy fresh local seafood. Try the crispy fish and chips or go for the full seafood tower experience!
And it's no wonder the seafood is so fresh, as Nevlunghavn's fishing harbour is right next to the hotel. If you're lucky, you'll see the fishing boats bringing in the day's catch. You can even buy it yourself from the fish shop on the harbour.
Drive east for about 20 minutes to reach the idyllic coastal town of Stavern.
Soak up the blend of maritime history and modern culture at Fredriksvern verft. It was Norway's first main naval base and has most likely been a harbour since ancient times. Now it's also the home of art galleries, museums, and exciting activities.
You can also wander over to the Hall of Rememberence. It's a memorial for sailors who lost their lives during WW1 and WW2.
Stavern is full of cute white houses and little shops by the sea. Enjoy wandering around the cosy town centre and maybe you'd like to spend the night at Hotel Wassilioff? This unique hotel has been around since 1844!
Camping paradise by the coast
There are plenty of great camp sites and places to park a motorhome along the coastline. This area is popular with holidaying Norwegians and is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy relaxing days on one of its many beaches.
Set up camp at Blokkebukta Camping, Solplassen Camping, Ula Camping, or Stolpestad Camping. You can also park motorhomes at Solsiden Bobilpark and Stavern Folkehøyskole.
Let the kids run around and enjoy playgrounds, surrounding nature, and the beach. There are so many family-friendly activities in the area, that it's perfect to use one of the many camp sites as a base. How about a day trip to Foldvik Family Park?

A five minute drive north of Stavern will take you to the Nerdrum Museum in the historic Agnes Factory building. Explore the permanent exhibition, showcasing highlights from more than 50 years of work by the famous Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum, who is also known as a controversial character.
There's a cosy café right by the museum called Havfuglen, named after Odd Nerdrum's illustrated children's book. Enjoy coffee and cakes served on old-fashioned crockery. The café plays exclusively classical music and offers cultural newspapers and poetry collections for guests to browse.
Or head to the Mio Gelato kiosk for creamy homemade gelato, made using only natural ingredients. It's right next to the Havfuglen café and has several tasty flavours to choose from!
Coastal wellness
From Nerdrum Museum it only takes around 10 minutes by car to reach another coastal town, known as Larvik. Did you know that this is where the Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl was born? You can even visit his childhood home!
Larvik is also great if you enjoy swimming and relaxation, as it's the home of the renowned Farris Bad spa! This architecturally impressive spa has the largest and most comprehensive spa department in Scandinavia. Indulge in some self-care with tailored treatments, a staircase that takes you directly from the spa into the sea, a subterranean grotto that fresh spring water bubbles up from, and delicious, nourishing food.

Wander around Larvik town centre for a spot of shopping. Then have a tasty lunch break at Ellings at the historic Festiviteten building.
For more nature and fresh air, swap the coastline for Bøkeskogen, Norway's largest and the world's northernmost beech tree forest. Follow the trails and enjoy the views of the town below! If you start to feel a bit peckish, you can stop by the Bøkekroa café.
Drive from Larvik towards Sandefjord for about 20 minutes and stop at Bondens hage. This farm shop sells beautiful flower bouquets and arrangements, as well as garden plants during the summer months. The café sells yummy baked goods, such as cinnamon buns, and the shop also offers high quality food products.
Top things to see and do

Food and drink
Find great places for food and drink in the Larvik and Stavern area.

You could head back to Oslo now, but if you have more time, you can add another stop on the way back. Tønsberg is about 30 minutes north of Bondens Hage by car and a great town to explore. Walk along the colourful pier or visit the Kaupang Viking Town that was founded around the year 800.
Walk up to Tønsberg's famous landmark Slottsfjelltårnet. The castle rock tower was completed in 1888 and stands 17 metres tall. There's also a museum at the foot of the hill if you want to learn more about its history.
Continue driving towards Oslo, before making a slight detour to Drøbak. It takes about an hour and a half from Tønsberg. In Drøbak you can take a ferry to Oscarsborg, a unique fortress on an island! Go on a guided tour of the fortress, then explore the island's beautiful surroundings. Various events are also held here, such as conserts.
