Besseggen is one of Norway’s most famous mountain hikes. Each year, around 60,000 hikers enjoy the breathtaking views from the top of the ridge. Come discover it for yourself!
How to get here
Amazing views of the wild landscape in Jotunheimen make Besseggen is one of Northern Europe's most visited mountain ridges. The nice thing about hiking a ridge is that you don't need to hike up and down the same trail. You can accent the ridge from both faces, but the easiest and most common route is to take the boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu and start your hike from there. To ensure you’ll make the Gjende boat, you should book tickets in advance. You can stay overnight at both Gjendesheim and Memurubu and start the day fresh and fit the next morning.
A 6–8 hour hike
The hike over Besseggen takes six to eight hours including breaks and is recommended for experienced hikers. The hike is about 14 kilometres long through hilly terrain, and ascends 1,100 meters above sea level. The ridge is both windy, steep and narrow. The hike requires some climbing up the ridge, but climbing equipment isn't necessary. Remember that it is only lofty for a short stretch, and the steepest part is over when you reach the top of the ridge (starting from Memurubu that is). If it feels too steep, it's always an option to turn back to Memurubu or hike via Bessvatnet lake instead of climbing the ridge (see the map below).
It's important to be well prepared before you start hiking. Pack food, water, extra clothes and follow the mountain code – it's never too late to turn around and go back.
Hiking season
The hiking season for Besseggen is from mid-June to mid-October, when the boats run regularly on Gjende lake. Peak season is in July and the first half of August, so try to plan your hike before or after then to avoid the crowds. There may be snow on the ridge until about the middle of June, so make sure the snow is gone to ensure good footing. Always ask a local before embarking.
Safety tips for summer hiking to Besseggen
Guided hikes
If you are inexperienced or feel unsure about the trip, we recommend that youjoin a guided hike. A good guide can turn an otherwise tough day into a fantastic experience.
Never start a mountain hike without being in good enough physical shape. Every year, rescue operations are required to help hikers stranded in the mountains. Some are exhausted, injured, freezing cold, or lost, especially if they haven't made it back before nightfall. Many are poorly dressed and lack proper hiking equipment.
To make sure you don't end up like them, prepare yourself properly and learn about mountain safety before you go!
The weather is key
Even if sunshine and fair weather are predicted, weather conditions can change quickly. Always check the weather forecast at yr.no before you start your trip and consult with local residents. Be prepared for sudden changes in the weather and pack a rain jacket and a warm wool sweater. We recommend that you have at least two days at your disposal to increase the chances of nice weather.
Do not hike if the forecast predicts strong winds, heavy rain, thunder and lightning or fog!
The mountain safety code
1. Plan your trip and inform others about the route you have selected.
2. Adapt your planned route according to your abilities and the conditions.
3. Check the weather forecast at Yr.no and avalanche warnings at Varsom.no.
4. Be prepared for bad weather and frost, even on short trips.
5. Bring the necessary equipment, so you can assist yourself and others.
6. Choose safe routes. Recognise avalanche terrain and unsafe ice.
7. Use a map and a compass. Always know where you are.
8. Don’t be ashamed to stop and go back.
9.Conserve your energy and seek shelter if necessary.
Proper hiking equipment
Pack a 30-litre backpack to be sure that you have enough room for everything you need in the Norwegian mountains. A map and compass, first-aid equipment, a fully charged phone, and a headlamp are just some of the things we recommend you keep in your backpack. Watch the video below for a complete packing list.
Warm, suitable clothing
With an elevation gain of nearly 1,100 metres on uneven terrain, it is crucial to wear suitable hiking shoes. Don't wear new hiking boots, but make sure to break them in before you go, to avoid blisters. There may be occasional strong gusts of wind on Besseggen, so wear wind and waterproof outerwear. Always pack an extra set of clothes, including a hat, scarf, and gloves or mittens.
Food and drink
Always bring enough food and drink when you set out on a trip. It is important to have enough refills to make sure your energy reserves last all the way back, not just to the top of the ridge.
Toilets
There are no toilets along the trails, so do your business before you start your hike. If you have to go along the way, keep downhill from the trails and well away from streams and lakes. Bring your rubbish back to a bin.
Other hiking routes in the area
There are many other hikes around Besseggen, including easier options. You can take the Gjende boat all the way west to Gjendebu and hike across Bukkelægret to Memurubu (and even head on to Besseggen from there, should you wish).
