The Peer Gynt festival in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley

Find out more about the Peer Gynt festival events, and plan your trip to one of Norway’s largest cultural festivals.

A festival with traditions

With the Norwegian mountains as a backdrop, the festival is a nine-day celebration with 35 events, including theatre, concerts, art exhibition, debates and more.

Every year since 1967, the Peer Gynt festival is held in August in the Gudbrandsdalen valley to celebrate the local legend that inspired Henrik Ibsen’s dramatic poem “Peer Gynt”, that has come to represent an aspect of Norwegian culture to the world. The main event of the festival is the theatre production of Peer Gynt at Gålå, which is well suited for an international audience.
