Svalbard Ski Marathon – a popular ski marathon in the High Arctic!
Participate in the world’s northernmost cross-country ski marathon accompanied by armed polar bear guards! Svalbard Ski Marathon offers a spectacular Arctic ending to the ski season on the last weekend in April each year.
You can choose between untimed classes (half marathon, half marathon youth and marathon) or try the timed full marathon. All classes are in classic style.
The Svalbard Ski Marathon, which was first held in 1993, is now Svalbard’s largest individual event. The event is organised by the local sports club Svalbard Turn. The course has an elevation change of around 400 altitude metres. Changing weather and the risk of polar bears means special attention towards safety. Polar bear guards patrol the course on snowmobiles, which adds an extra dimension to an already memorable event.
Registration opened on 1st of September 2018, and there are a maximum of 1000 skiers.
