What is the perfect gift for the winter city that has it all? In the new year, Tromsø will have its very own pop-up ice hotel.
What would Elsa from “Frozen” do if she landed a job as hotel manager in Tromsø?
Probably the same thing Kirsten Marie Holmen, the entrepreneur behind the popular Magic Ice bars, is now planning: Building a hotel where everything from the walls and the roof to the beds and the hotel bar (including the glasses) are built from nothing but ice and snow.
Don’t worry, though. The beds will be covered with warm reindeer hide.
The Magic Ice Hotel will be open for bookings early next year and is being built next to the wildlife resort Tromsø Villmarkssenter, home to more than 300 huskies.
“Guests will be offered a number of spectacular experiences, whether they feel like going on a dog sled ride or saying hello to reindeer. And then there are the amazing Northern Lights”, Holmen says.
“And after a visit to the ice bar, guests can eat in one of the beautiful houses on the wildlife resort.”
If you have kids who love “Frozen”, this might be as close as they’re ever going to get to realizing their secret dream of a full scale Elsa ice palace, unless they grow up to be multimillionaires with very particular tastes in architecture and interior design.
The construction of the hotel may look something like this:
As Holmen is not in possession of actual ice magic (that we know of – but she did build an ice bar in the Caribbean), the building blocks are instead provided by DesignIce Norway, a merry band of professional ice sculptors.
They carve out sculptures and blocks of ice with the help of this fabulous machine:
Construction on the ice hotel will be complete at the end of January, and it will stay open until melting away sometime this spring. So far, it’s the fourth ice hotel built in Norway, the other three being Kirkenes Snowhotel, Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel in Alta, and Hunderfossen Snowhotel in Lillehammer.
Holmens company Magic North AS also run ice bars and ice galleries in Svolvær, Oslo and Bergen. In 2018, she will expand further, building a permanent ice bar in Tromsø that will be located in the new dock terminal.
