Festivals in Norway

A feast of flavours, sights, and sounds.

Great art and culture is even better when you share the experience. Music, film, and other popular festivals are a key part of the booming Norwegian culture scene.

Norway offers more than 900 festivals to match almost anyone's interests in music, food, sport, film, theatre, literature, history and much more.

Summer is undoubtedly the biggest festival season, but several exciting events take place throughout the year all over the country.

There is a myriad of music festivals in Norway, covering both popular genres such as jazz, blues and contemporary music, as well as niche festivals showcasing more experimental music. The festival scene in Norway holds a high international standard and measures up to the best festivals in Europe.

Festival packing tips

Festivals in Norway might present you with 'four seasons in one day' and it is highly recommended to pack functional clothing. Here is a list of essentials:

Layered clothing: add or remove clothing according to the temperature. Light wool is recommended, even during summer.

Rain gear/poncho: stay dry on a rainy day.

Rain boots: you get far with trainers, but only rain boots will keep your feet happy in heavy rain.

Sunglasses: look like a rock star. No need to squint at the stage.

Sunscreen: protect yourself in the sun.

Earplugs: in case you need to give your ears a break.

Black metal and jazz

Norway is in many ways a country of extremes, so it’s perhaps no coincidence genres like black metal and jazz have thrived here for decades. Norway is the home of black metal, and there is no better place to experience it than the Inferno festival, held every Easter in Oslo. There are also international jazz festivals in Bergen, Molde, Kongsberg, Haugesund, Oslo, Lillehammer and more.

For more extremes, enjoy Ekstremsportveko in Voss, the largest extreme sports festival of its kind, which also includes live music performances. And don't miss Voss's jazz festival, Vossajazz, usually held in April.

Jazz and Blues festivals

Experience Europe's oldest annual jazz festival in Molde and other top festivals.

Festivals for foodies

Food, and especially locally-sourced food, is increasingly important to Norwegians, and there are several annual bigger festivals, like for example the Matstreif festival in Oslo, the Trøndelag Food Festival and Trondheim Brewery Festival and Gladmat in Stavanger, but also several niche festivals like the Rakfisk (semi-fermented trout) festival in Valdres and cider festivals in Hardanger.

    3-course dinner // Fjærå Sjøhus // Håsong 2026

The village of Hosanger, as a church site and municipal centre, and especially the area around Mjøsvågen, has over the years had many licensed premises and dining venues. Fjærå Sjøhus is located in premises that have previously been both a coffin factory and a boathouse, and is a family business run by father and son, Terje and Erlend Mjøs. They proudly carry on the village's tradition of welcoming visitors and locals alike. But in a new era, where Hosanger is increasingly visited by people from all over the world. Largely due to Kossdalsvegen and the 17 spectacular bends up the mountain pass at the end of the valley. The premises on the ground floor, with original timber walls and maritime decor, where the 3-course dinner is served, is normally used for pub evenings, intimate concerts, pop-up dinners, private events and more. Fjærå Sjøhus has promised us an exciting menu featuring among other things langoustine and monkfish, and we hope as many as possible would like to join us for this year's 3-course dinner during Håsong. 3-course menu Langoustine soup Root vegetables · sea roe · toasted sourdough bread · wild garlic butter Monkfish Broccolini · parsnip purée · cured ham · chanterelle sauce Chantilly cream Fresh fruit · lemon curd Photo: Rune Langeland

Welcome to Sarpsborg Viking Festival 2026 in Landeparken, 17–19 July 2026! Join us as several hundred Vikings from Norway and Europe move into Landeparken and recreate the life and atmosphere of Viking Age Borg as it was 1,000 years ago! For the 13th time, Olavsdagene is organising a Viking market in Landeparken in collaboration with the Viking group Vinir. Visitors will get to taste, smell, hear and feel what life in Borg was like at the time when Olav Haraldsson came sailing up the river and settled by the mighty waterfall. At the Viking market, you can experience how the Vikings lived. In the different Viking tents, traditional crafts are demonstrated and handmade goods are sold. Here you can watch the blacksmith at work, taste Viking food and try a range of activities such as archery, axe throwing, a climbing park, a treasure hunt and much more! Throughout the Viking market, there will be an exciting programme with musical performances, storytelling sessions, Viking games and battle shows at scheduled times. The excitement will be high when the Vikings compete to see who deserves the title of “Strongest Viking”! WOULD YOU LIKE A TICKET FOR ONE OF THE OTHER DAYS? Gamle Vossebanen - veterantog med damplokomotiv og spisevogn - 2. august 2026

That makes perfect sense! No problem at all. Here is the translation: Take a journey back in time to the golden age of railways, to a time of uniform buttons with the royal coat of arms, the sound of wooden carriage doors slamming shut, and the locomotive whistle saying "all aboard" and the train can go. Relax and enjoy a wonderful Sunday excursion while the landscape rolls past the train windows. The trip is run with a steam locomotive and teak carriages from the 1920s and 30s. Along the way you can experience a beautiful landscape and impressive engineering, close to lakes and water on one side, and steep mountain slopes on the other. Garnes stasjon is Museet Gamle Vossebanen's main station and two of the train trips start from here. The trip from Midttun will have a longer stop at Garnes. Garnes stasjon has its own museum exhibition, station kiosk, souvenir shop, and otherwise a fine opportunity to look at locomotives and carriages in the station area. On this day we also have a visit from a professional trio – Boggien Dampjazzband – who play light music in the carriages throughout the day. First round trip with arrival no later than 10:45. Departure Garnes 11:00. The trip goes to Midttun and returns to Garnes at 13:00. Second round trip with arrival no later than 11:55. Departure Midttun 12:10. The trip goes to Garnes and returns to Midttun at 15:05. Third round trip with arrival no later than 14:00. Departure Garnes 14:15. The trip goes to Midttun and returns to Garnes at 16:15. The dining car is polished to perfection with real porcelain, white tablecloths, a chef, maître d' and waiters. Let yourself be tempted by food made on board the train, to buy tickets for a train trip (approximately two hours), and reserve a seat in the dining car (approximately one hour) for a wonderful meal on the train. Reserving a seat in the dining car must be done in addition to purchasing a ticket: https://njk.no/opplevelser/spisevogn/spisevognbestilling Please note: For gluten-free and vegan dishes this must be stated as a comment in the table reservation form.
