The family adventure valley

A map of Norway with a red dot on Hallingdal.
© Mapbox © OpenStreetMap Improve this map

Midway between Bergen and Oslo lies Hallingdal, home to towns including Flå, Nesbyen, Gol, Ål, Hemsedal, and Geilo. Go hiking, cycling, or horseback riding in the vast mountain terrain, or chase thrills on two wheels with mountain biking and downhill cycling.

Try your luck fishing in the famous Hallingdalselva river (licence required, in season) or one of the region''s 50 lakes. In winter, explore as many as 2,000 kilometres of groomed cross country trails and plenty of family-friendly ski resorts.

Meet bears, wolves and moose in Flå Bear Park and Langedrag Nature Park, or play and climb at Hallingdal Feriepark.

Explore all the options below, or go directly to:

A close-up of a leopard in the Bear Park in Flå, Hallingdal, Eastern Norway

Two children are running in the mountains of Hallingdal, Eastern Norway

Bears. Amur leopards. Crocodiles and pythons. Bjørneparken is where the wild things are.

A visit to the mountain farm Langedrag is also highly recommended. Get cuddly with the cute farm animals and see wolves and lynx at a close (but safe) distance.

Run through the wind-swept, heather-clad mountains or conquer peaks like Høgevarde, Reineskarvet, and Hallingskarvet.

Hallingdal offers lots of memorable experiences for the whole family.

Ride behind a team of eager huskies ...

... challenge yourselves in the climbing parks in Ål, Geilo and Hemsedal ...

... or go exploring on two wheels!

With a myriad of trails through beautiful forest and mountain terrain, Hallingdal is also a paradise for mountain biking. Head to Nesbyen (pictured), for example ...

... or to one of the three local bike parks for downhill fun.

In the summer, the ski lifts in Hemsedal and Geilo are open for cyclists.

Who’ll make it down first?

If you’re unlucky with the weather, the water park Tropicana in Gol is a fab choice. Another recommendation is the enormous activity park Hallingdal Holiday Park, which also houses a 5-star campsite.

Hallingdal also encourages you to wind down a notch or two.

Sit back and enjoy the quiet nature or go trout fishing in a lake or river.

Will the fish bite?

Fishing rod in hand, you might just catch your own dinner!

Speaking of food: thanks to strong local traditions, Hallingdal offers a culinary adventure. The food network Hallingkost helps visitors find local specialties like the delicious soup småmat, gommokaku (sourdough teacakes), lefsekling and rummebrød (two types of flat bread).

Delicious!
