Manners and common sense on the trail
Having great trails to ride on is not a right, but a privilege. The Norwegian organization for mountain biking (NOTS) urges everyone to be considerate of the trails. Here are the most important guidelines for summer trail wit.
1. Be considerate and give way for pedestrians.
2. Limit your speed, don’t be a danger or nuisance to others.
3. Don’t make new trails.
4. Don’t ride on vulnerable trails right after heavy rainfalls.
5. Don’t make the trail wider.
6. Carry your bike through marshlands to prevent deep grooves.
7. Don’t lock the rear wheel when you ride down steep hills.
8. The biker riding uphill has the right of way.
Downhill biking is, as the name implies, all about the ride down. In Hafjell, a gondola and a chairlift are both ready to transport you and your bike up to the trailheads.
The 18 downhill trails in Hafjell Bike Park vary from wide open machine built roller coaster trails to more technical steep and winding singletracks through the forest.
All the trails are colour marked according to their difficulty, and there are routes for all skill levels here, from first-timers to true bikeoholics.
When you’re so bonked you need a break, sit down at Skavlen restaurant at Mosetertoppen and enjoy a meal – with a first-class view of the Gudbrandsdalen valley.
Step off the Gondola at Mosetertoppen, where both you and the kids can play on bikes, skateboards or scooters in the large paved pump track – suitable for both beginners and expert mountain bikers who want some skill training. The little ones will also love the “funtrack”, which is filled with wooden features, balance boards, bridges, teeter-totters, and other easy obstacles.
Hafjell and the surrounding areas have many opportunities for other types of biking as well, whether you prefer wider roads, wooded paths and gravel roads, or more gnarly trails covered with tree roots and rocks.
From Mosetertoppen, the trail network stretches for kilometres to the east and north and also connects with the Sjusjøen and Lillehammer trails in the south. You’ll cycle through a varied landscape just at the treeline, with scenic views of the nearby mountains and valleys.
LBS means “local bike shop” to you newbies, and in Hafjell bike shop you can get rental bikes for the whole family – from downhill and full suspension trail bikes to cross-country and e-bikes, and with all the necessary protective equipment included.
If you have a problem with your own bike, the Bike shop cycologists can fix pretty much everything, or just help you set it up perfectly. You can also rent safety equipment separately.
Do you need an introduction to downhill biking, wish for a better flow, or just want to master that tricky turn? A team of experienced instructors can guide you through Hafjell’s bike scene, either alone or in a group lesson.
The Lillehammer region is full of fun amusement parks like Hunderfossen and Lilleputthammer, art and outdoor museums like Lillehammer art museum and Maihaugen, and events and activities for the whole family. And with plenty of restaurants and accommodation options in the area, you’re sure to have a pleasant stay.
