GLUTEN FREE
food and restaurants in Norway
Finding good gluten free food and restaurant options when travelling can be a real hassle. Here's our guide to making your holiday in Norway a safer and tastier adventure!
Where can I eat? If you are suffering from Celiac disease, are allergic to or have an intolerance for gluten, finding a place to eat can be a quite stressful and time consuming experience.
To make things a bit easier, we have gathered some information that can be helpful when travelling in Norway, as well as a list of dedicated GF eateries and shops where you can find artisanal GF products.
Where to eat
In general, you will find GF options on the menu in most decent restaurants all over Norway, and more and more place have allergy labels on their menu. If you ask your server, they may also often be able to modify dishes on the menu.
A lot of typically Norwegian dishes are naturally GF, including seafood dishes and meat and potato based dishes (reindeer, deer, moose, beef, most meat balls, etc), but ask if the sauce or broth is GF. Most Norwegian specialities, like fenalår, cured sausages, smoked salmon, and our good cheeses are GF. Buy a GF loaf of bread and go for a picnic!
Indian restaurants are usually also a great choice, as most of the dishes are naturally GF. Most sushi places have good GF options, but remember to ask for GF soy sauce. Mexican restaurants are also often GF friendly. Many Spanish tapas restaurants also have good GF options.
Many bars have GF beers, and you can find them in most supermarkets.
Food along the road? Circle K petrol stations have a lot of GF fast food options, burgers, pizza, toast, hot dogs with GF buns, and have GF introduction courses for employees.
You can also download the Find me GF app, to see more options from people like yourself!
Recommended places
We have also added a list with recommendations by Norwegian locals who are members of different GF celiac groups on social media.
NOTE: Most of these places are regular restaurants, so we can't guarantee that they are 100 per cent safe. There might be a risk of cross contamination or traces of gluten, and they do not usually have totally separate areas for making the GF food. Always ask first, to minimise risk of eating gluten, especially if you are hyper sensitive or have additional allergies. Restaurants can also change menus over time.
This is not a complete list, and it's being continually updated. We have tried to list places that give that little extra for the GF community, not all places that have GF options, since there are so many.
