Trondheim in summer

Fun and flavourful!

© Mapbox © OpenStreetMap Improve this map

Halfway(ish!) between the North and the South lies Trondheim, a beautiful city full of friendly locals, called Trøndere in Norwegian. Here, Viking history meets a young, creative vibe. The city is home to the iconic Nidaros Cathedral, a national treasure, while the state-of-the-art museum PoMo is one of several experiences that has put Trondheim on the cultural map.

The city is also home to two Michelin-starred restaurants: Fagn, known for its inventive Nordic cuisine, and Speilsalen, at the elegant, listed Britannia Hotel. It’s no surprise that international culinary experts named Trøndelag – the county in which Trondheim is located – the European Region of Gastronomy in 2022 – the first time the title was awarded to a Norwegian region.

With a compact and pedestrian-friendly city centre and reliable public transport, getting around Trondheim is easy.

Stroll around the colourful, cobbled pedestrian streets in the historic Bakklandet area – a popular meeting place that manages to be both hip and charming at the same time.

Enjoy a coffee at one of the many cosy local cafés, before hopping on a bike, just like the locals do!

In the last few years, Trondheim has established itself as Norway's leading cycling city. Bakklandet is home to Trampe, the world's first bicycle lift!

Continue cycling or walk across the Gamle Bybro bridge towards the city centre. Take your time so you don't miss…

… the view of the 18th century wooden warehouses that line the Nidelva river.

When you get to the other side of the river, head to the Nidarosdomen Cathedral, Trondheim’s Gothic queen.

Verdslitteraturen har sett eit like formidabelt avtrykk i Andeby.

On Saturday, 7 March, you will have the opportunity to experience Eatnamastit together with artist Outi Pieski, followed by a conversation between Outi Pieski and Dr. Eeva-Kristiina Nylander. ____ What does it mean when Sámi objects and memories that have ended up in museums across Europe find their way home again? And what happens when artists and researchers use these returns as a starting point to talk about identity, power, and the future? The concept of rematriation is about more than returning objects – it is about giving cultural heritage renewed meaning today, both emotionally and culturally, within Sámi communities. You are warmly invited to a guided tour of the exhibition Eatnamastit, followed by a conversation with artist Outi Pieski and Dr. Eeva-Kristiina Nylander. The conversation will offer an opportunity to reflect on questions such as: Who truly owns cultural heritage? How can the past provide new perspectives on identity today? And can art be a tool for shifting power structures? The event takes place at Trondheim kunstmuseum, Bispegata. The conversation will be held in English.

    Beethoven & Lutosławski

From Hickox’s Treasure Chest Conductor: Adam Hickox Piano: Paul Lewis Program Unsuk Chin: Subito con forza Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 3 Witold Lutosławski: Concerto for Orchestra About the concert This evening, Adam Hickox has chosen works that really complement each other well in a colorful concert full of energy and fantastic music! In Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, the contours of the mature Beethoven are visible and it is almost as if the first movement is looking back towards Mozart, while the second movement looks forward, embraces the ideals of Romanticism and never looks back. The evening’s soloist, Paul Lewis, is considered one of our very best Beethoven interpreters, and critics in all corners of the world are raving about his concerts, so here’s to enjoying! In 1950, Lutosławski was commissioned to compose an orchestral work to celebrate the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra finally getting back on its feet after the Second World War. His source material had always been Polish folk music, and now he took full advantage of it. Concerto for Orchestra is permeated with folk melodies, and these are stretched and stretched and thematized and embroidered in innovative ways in a work in which the orchestra and its instrumental groups really get to play the main role as soloists. The concert opens with Unsuk Chin's subito con forza from 2020, which was written for the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth. The piece is full of musical references to his music and a fireworks display of a celebration!
