Mission: Impossible locations in Norway

It's an impossible mission to not be amazed by the Norwegian fjords.

Tom Cruise seems to agree! He's visited Norway on three separate occasions to film scenes for the Mission: Impossible franchise. His latest film, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, hits the big screen in May 2025.

And this time, the mission features stunning Arctic landscapes...

1

Svalbard: coming soon

Tom Cruise and his crew never tire of Norway's untamed locations. For the latest Mission: Impossible film, they travelled to Svalbard in March 2023, filming for a full ten days. The freezing conditions and dramatic landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for action on a blockbuster scale!

They used planes to capture the nature from above, and ships to travel to Borebukta and Ekmanfjorden in the northern part of Isfjorden. You can actually visit this part of Svalbard by taking a boat trip in the summer.

P.S. While you're in Svalbard, you can also visit the special Adventdalen valley, where parts of Superman (2025) were filmed.

2

Hellesylt: an epic stunt

Engineers, base jumpers and the movie crew spent months in Hellesylt close to the Geirangerfjord in Sunnmøre.

This is where Tom Cruise did what's considered one of the biggest stunts in cinema history: a motorcycle jump off the 1,246-metre-high Helsetkopen mountain cliff into a base jump! CRAZY!

Tom Cruise did the jump himself. He wanted it to be perfect, so he did the incredible stunt six times in one day!

Watch behind the scenes footage of the stunt.

The movie poster of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning - Part One, displays both the nature and the stunt from Helsetkopen.

Want to see it yourself? Join 62°NORD Adventures for a guided hiking tour of the Helsetkopen mountain. The hike takes you through parts of the Geirangerfjord UNESCO World Heritage site. Don't go too close to the edge!

You can also embark on a guided e-bike tour through the lush valley of Hellesylt and gaze up at Helsetkopen from a safe distance. This is where Tom Cruise landed after his epic stunt!

3

Romsdalen: a dramatic train ride

Tom Cruise and co-star Esai Manuel Morales Jr. engage in an intense fight atop a moving train on the Rauma Railway, set against the dramatic nature in the Northwest.

Rauma has been named Europe’s most beautiful railway line. The 1 hour and 40 minute-journey takes you from the wild mountains surrounding Dombås to the fjord in the mountaineering capital of Åndalsnes.

"My biggest action sequence in this movie was chasing Ethan on top of a moving train in Norway. I had never been on a train before and McQ decided to put me on top of the thing! And that was the first thing I shot in the movie.

The experience was breath-taking, though. After you get over the idea of falling off the top of the train, you get a chance to look up and see these massive mountains on either side of you as you blow past them, going fast."
Greg Tarzan Davies, Actor

In the film, the striking Kylling bridge ('chicken bridge') gets blown up!

Don't worry: it didn't blow up for real! When you arrive safe and sound in Åndalsnes, you can therefore still drive or bike the famous Trollstigen road that connects Åndalsnes with the place where Tom Cruise stayed during the shoot ...

4

Valldal: serious recreation

Tom Cruise stayed in the charming village of Valldal in Sunnmøre and commuted to nearby locations from there.

Valldal is known as the adventure valley, offering rafting, a climbing park, fjord kayaking and more.

While in Valldal, you should also abseil down the Zakarias dam in Tafjord. Although Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, didn't do this in the film, he sure would if he got the chance.

NOTE: The age limit is 18.

4

Preikestolen: a literal cliffhanger

Further south in Fjord Norway you can hike to Preikestolen. This is one of the most iconic spots for visitors in Norway, and it provided the perfect backdrop for the cliffhanger finale of Mission: Impossible – Fallout 6.
