Choose between more than 1,000 campgrounds for tents, caravans and motorhomes all over Norway. Many of them are beautifully situated by the fjords, the lakes and in the mountains. Many also offer camping cabins.

Freedom to go anywhere at any time, and lots of opportunities to enjoy the quiet surroundings or meet new friends!

Norwegian campgrounds are often situated in idyllic areas, close to mountains, fjords, lakes and nice beaches. But you don't have to leave the city – camping options are also found just a short distance from almost every city center.

Some campgrounds offer just basic commodities, while more and more offer a broad range of excellent, modern facilities and activities for the whole family.

In many places, you can now rent boats, kayaks and bicycles, and some places even have swimming pools and large playgrounds for children.

If you are travelling with kids, choose one of Norway's many family-friendly campsites.

Q&A about camping in Norway

Do I need to book a campsite in advance in Norway?
It's recommended that you book in advance, especially in peak summer and in popular areas, as the campsite might be full.

You can book a spot or cabin in advance at most campsites.

Where can I camp in Norway?
You’ll find camping sites all over the country, many of them in scenic areas in Fjord Norway and the Trøndelag region.

How much does camping cost in Norway?
On average, one night at a campsite for a campervan or motorhome costs about 330 NOK. To pitch a tent will typically cost around 150-350 NOK for one to two persons and a car, MC or bicycle.

Can I rent a cabin?

Yes! It's becoming increasingly popular to rent camping cabins, so it's a good idea to plan and book as early as you can. You'll find varying standards – from small huts with simple bunk beds and shared toilets (from around 500-800 NOK), to large and well-equipped luxury cabins.

Please note that the cabin standards are measured independently and not based on the campsite standard. For example, a two-star campground may have five-star cabins.

  • 1 star: Basic facilities, typically simple standards.
  • 2 stars: Additional offerings and improved sanitary conditions.
  • 3 stars: Good sanitary facilities, kitchens, playgrounds, and other services.
  • 4 stars: Increased comfort, larger campsites, modern facilities, often activities and entertainment.
  • 5 stars: High standard, extensive range of services, spa, restaurant, large and well-equipped sanitary facilities

The classification is carried out by NHO Reiseliv (the Norwegian Hospitality Association) based on Nordic star requirements and is reviewed annually.

Free camping in Norway

What are the rules for free camping in Norway?

The right to roam allows you to set up tents or hammocks for free, most places in Norway, but we strongly encourage to use official and designated camping grounds due to high pressure on nature, especially in popular and vulnerable areas. In some areas of Lofoten and Western Norway, there are now restrictions on free camping, mainly during summer.

And remember that many Norwegian roads are very narrow, so take extra caution when driving a caravan or a motorhome. Some roads are also closed for this kind of traffic.

Bridges can also be temporarily closed due to strong winds. This also applies to several of our National Scenic Routes.
