Trondheim in winter

True "kos"!

"Kos" is the uniquely Norwegian term for cosiness. Find out why Trondheim just might be the capital of kos!

© Mapbox © OpenStreetMap Improve this map

Halfway(ish!) between northern and southern Norway, lies Trondheim, a beautiful city full of friendly locals, called Trøndere in Norwegian. Here, Viking history meets a young, creative vibe. The city is home to the iconic Nidaros Cathedral, a national treasure, while the state-of-the-art museum PoMo is one of several experiences that has put Trondheim on the cultural map.

The city is also home to two Michelin-starred restaurants: Fagn, known for its inventive Nordic cuisine, and Speilsalen, at the elegant Britannia Hotel. It’s no surprise that international culinary experts named Trøndelag – the county in which Trondheim is located – the European Region of Gastronomy in 2022. This was the first time the title was awarded to a Norwegian region.

With a compact and pedestrian-friendly city centre and reliable public transport, getting around Trondheim is easy.

Christmas market in Trondheim

Nidaros Cathedral is Trondheim's number one attraction, the northernmost medieval cathedral in Europe. It’s especially atmospheric when frosted with snow!

Continue across Gamle Bybro bridge for one of Trondheim's most iconic winter views of traditional wooden houses reflected in the icy river below.

The cosy neighbourhood Bakklandet is your next stop – a historic district loved for its colourful houses and cosy cafés in which to warm up!

December is a good time to visit! Get into the festive spirit at Trondheim's Christmas Market – a tasty winter wonderland of artisan cheeses, handmade chocolates, and warm, spiced treats.
