Video games inspired by Norway

Many of the most popular video games in the world are inspired by Norway. Explore the country's dramatic and stunning landscapes from the comfort of your home, or even better: come explore it IRL!

God of War Ragnarök

Has Kratos left Greece and come to Norway? Well, at least by the looks of it. In the latest instalment of the series, Ragnarök, Kratos finds himself in Midgard, fighting mythological creatures from Norse mythology, as well as the gods themselves!

The game's background landscapes are inspired by several places in Norway, the most recognisable, and perhaps the most famous, of which is Jotunheimen. Why not go and explore in the footsteps of Kratos?

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Jumping into the world of Vikings and raids, the latest instalment of the Assassin's Creed series brings players along on an adventure portraying the Norwegian Vikings and their settlement in England around the year 800.

Some parts of the game let you explore majestic mountains and the beautiful northern lights. The two stunning scenic locations of Rygjafylke and Hordafylke in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are inspired by real-life locations in the Stavanger region and Fjord Norway and the characters are inspired by Vikings that once called Norway home.

The Witcher III

The Witcher is a novel that has been adapted into both a TV series and a video game. In it, you can explore parts of Norway as part of the main mission, which takes you to Lofoten and Larvik. You will find these places in the Viking-inspired island kingdom of Skellige. It's a kingdom that's clearly inspired by Norwegian cultural heritage and landscapes. Even though the game takes place in a fictional world, it does contain elements of the real world.

You'll meet Norwegian-inspired characters who work in traditional Norwegian professions and even get to fight a monster or two!

Battlefield

Considered one of the best first-person shooter games ever, the Battlefield series uses landscapes from Norway in several games, most noticeably in Battlefield V.

This game portrays the Norwegian resistance during WWII, in the mission called Nordlys. Players join the resistance in Rjukan, Norway, in the spring of 1943. They then complete a version of the real-life sabotage mission where the resistance stopped the German export of heavy water. You can ski in the mountains of Telemark, sneak around in traditional houses, or just go exploring in the area. It's almost as good as being there in real life!
