The best electric fjord cruises in Norway

Imagine seeing this view as you glide smoothly and silently on the fjords onboard a modern, comfortable boat.

A fjord cruise is an amazing way to explore the coast. By choosing one of Norway's many electric cruises, you can do so with a clearer conscience.

Cruise Norway's fjords – electrically. Here's a guide to scenic fjord cruises all over the country.

Electric cruise companies

Brim Explorer is an innovative Norwegian tourism and technology company, offering more sustainable experiences aboard 5 purpose-built, quiet-sailing hybrid and electric catamarans in Tromsø, Lofoten, Bodø, Oslo, Stavanger, and Svalbard. The vessels are also wheelchair-friendly.

Brim Explorer is also building two new high-speed trimarans, which will be the world's most efficient battery-powered passenger vessels, scheduled for delivery in spring 2027.

The Fjords is a company that brings together maritime expertise and tourism, offering unique fjord-based experiences on innovative, zero-emission vessels. It's owned by Norway's best, and offers tours in Oslo and Fjord Norway on vessels that are either fully or partially powered by electricity.

Its award-winning catamarans were designed and built in Norway by Brødrene Aa in Hyen, inspired by trails found in nature. Its vessels are also wheelchair-friendly.

Rødne is Norway's largest family-owned high-speed boat company, offering tours in Stavanger, Bergen, and Tromsø. It invests in innovative sustainable solutions. Its MS Rygerelektra is not only the world's fastest electric catamaran, it also has the world's longest range for a battery-powered passenger boat.

Fjord Tours is a tour operator passionate about sustainable tourism. It offers day trips and round trips including cruises that depart from Oslo, Bergen, Ålesund, and Stavanger. It works closely with local partners to provide low emission options wherever possible.

Norway is leading the race

Already the world leader when it comes to electric bikes and cars, the Norwegian electric transport revolution has hit the fjords as well. More and more electric day cruise vessels, express boats, and ferries are emerging, giving you the opportunity to enjoy quiet, smooth, and scenic travel.

Many of Norway's newest electric and hybrid vessels are designed and built in Norway, bringing together pioneering technology, innovative design, and generations of maritime expertise. The result is a new way to explore the coast – and further proof of Norway's leading role in shaping the future of sustainable seafaring.

Quiet, zero-emission travel feels perfectly at home among Norway’s pristine fjords and dramatic coastal landscapes. Step out on deck, or settle into a warm and comfortable lounge with elegant Nordic design and panoramic windows made for soaking up the view.

All that remains is to choose your journey. And with so many unforgettable cruises to discover, that may be the hardest part!

Northern lights cruise with Brim Explorer electrical cruise ship

Northern Norway

This part of Norway has outstanding nature that is definitely worth enjoying on an electric cruise! You can experience everything from Arctic wildlife and the green northern lights dancing across the sky, to never-ending sunlight in summer and swooping eagles from towering mountains.

There are several options for cruises in Lofoten, Tromsø, Bodø, and Svalbard with hybrid-electric ships.

In Lofoten, Brim Explorer offers cruises to the narrow and spectacular Trollfjord as well as northern lights cruises.

In Tromsø, whale watching with Brim Explorer or Rødne are two of the best options for comfortable, sustainable, and ethical whale watching around Skjervøy.

Brim Explorer, Rødne Fjord Cruise and Fjord Tours also offer other kinds of cruises from Tromsø, including dinner cruises, northern light cruises, and midnight sun cruises.

    Silent Whale Watching

We depart Tromsø in the morning and head out to the whales’ feeding grounds in time to enjoy the few hours of polar daylight. On the way you can take in the breathtaking views of frozen landscapes in comfortable, warm lounges with panoramic windows. You’ll find a selection of food and drinks for purchase on board. While we search for the whales, our passionate guides will share personal stories about interesting sights along the way and give you in debt information about the Orca and humpback Whale. Once the whales have been spotted, we switch to our electric and silent engine to minimise disturbance to the whales. Purpose built for whale watching, our boat has multiple decks, giving you space and a great views. *Please note that the duration of this tour depends on the whales’ location and is around 9 hours. The exact season varies year to year, but is usually between November and January. Our crew will do their best to find the whales but we can not guarantee whales sightings.

Western Norway

Marvel at UNESCO-listed fjords with stunning scenery! It's no secret that this part of Norway is famous for its stunning fjord landscapes, making it both a popular and rewarding choice for fjord cruises.

Nærøyfjord

One of Norway's most popular electric sightseeing cruises operates between Flåm and Gudvangen, through the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord. This cruise is often combined with the famous Flåm railway, which connects to the Bergen railway between Oslo and Bergen, making it possible to enjoy as a long day trip from either city. But it's much better to stay for at least one night along the way! Check out different round trip options with Fjord tours' popular Norway in a Nutshell.

Geirangerfjord

Another UNESCO-listed gem is the Geirangerfjord. Geiranger Fjordservice offers silent fjord cruises on the fjord and between Ålesund and Geiranger year-round aboard the modern Geirangerfjord III, a locally built hybrid-powered vessel.

Every element of the ship has been carefully engineered to meet and exceed the zero-emission requirements now required to operate in Norway's World Heritage fjords.

You can also experience the famous Geirangerfjord in an electric RIB-boat.

Bergen

There are also several electric cruise options from Bergen to the scenic and narrow Mostraumen strait. Along the way, you will pass numerous charming villages and waterfalls.

Electric ferries and express boats

Zero-emission in the UNESCO fjords

Zero-emission requirements for ships in Norway's World Heritage fjords came into force on 1 January 2026. The ban applies to passenger ships and ferries under 10,000 gross tonnage. For larger cruise ships, the requirement has been postponed until 1 January 2032.

Coastal Express route

Did you know that you can cruise along the whole of Norway if you want to? There are two major operators sailing along the Norwegian Coastal Express route, Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages.

Havila Voyages operates some of the world's most modern low emission cruise ships, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and large battery packs. Their vessels can sail for hours emission-free.

Hurtigruten is also working continuously to reduce their impact and improve how they sail through technology, innovation, and everyday choices on board.

It's also worth mentioning Hurtigruten Norway's ambitious "Sea Zero" project, where they aim to build the world's first zero-emission cruise ship by 2030.
