The wild Atlantic road

Norwegian Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen

Feel the forces of nature when you drive along the Atlantic road, one of 18 Norwegian Scenic Routes.

Nature meets modern engineering, creating this highly unique driving experience.

The 36-km-long wild stretch will take you from Kårvåg, outside Kristiansund, to the fishing village of Bud, passing seven incredible bridges over the Atlantic Ocean.

The Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen, the Atlantic Road, in the Northwest, is often named one of the most beautiful and impressive roads in the world. Just ask James Bond!

Drive on the Atlantic Road

The Scenic Route Atlanterhavsvegen is 36 kilometres long in total. The most famous stretch, the Atlantic Road, connects Averøy with the mainland via seven bridges that crosses a series of small islands.

This road is featured in several international film and TV productions, including the James Bond film No Time to Die and the hit HBO series Succession.

The route is an 8-hour drive from Oslo, a 9-hour drive from Bergen, 3 hours and 40 minutes from Trondheim, and a scenic 2-hour-40-minute drive from Ålesund. You can also fly to Kristiansund or Molde, rent a car and start your trip from there.

It's also possible to cycle, but be aware that there may be a lot of traffic.

You can book plane tickets with Norwegian, Widerøe, or SAS.

We suggest that you start (or end) your trip in cosy Kristiansund!

The tiny passenger ferry Sundbåten takes you (for free!) between the four different islands that make up Kristiansund.

Disembark at Gomalandet, where you can visit the Norwegian Clipfish Museum and learn more about the city's unique clipfish history.

More to see and do in Kristiansund.

Drive 30 kilometres through the beautiful landscapes of Averøy, before stopping at the cosy Lanullva shop in Kårvåg.

Stock up on warm, super soft woollen clothes before getting ready for the highlight: The Atlantic Road!

This is also the starting point of the Scenic Route.

At the first stop, Geitøya, you should consider taking a boat trip to the unique, historical hotel Håholmen Havstuer, located on an island community just five minutes from the road.

Go for lunch or spend an exceptional night here!

During summer, there is a regular boat service (for a small fee, free for hotel guests).

It's a real gem, packed with history, love, and the spirit of adventure.

The kind of place where you forget about the rest of the world, and just want to… be.

Continue towards the main attraction: The Storseisund bridge!

Only stop at designated places along the road, and remember that you should not stay here overnight. There are a lot of beautiful camping sites close by!

Stop for a stroll to the view point and elevated path that takes you around Eldhusøya island, accessible for all.

And remember to bring your fishing rod!

There are several fishing spots along the road, including at Geitøya and by the Myrbærholm bridge.

Where to stay

…and what to do along the Atlantic Road.

Check out the marble sculpture, Columna Transatlantica, at Hågå, before you head down on narrow roads to stunning Farstadsanden beach

Here, you can go for 2.5 kilometre walk out to Nordneset Lighthouse.

The road takes you further along the Hustadvika bay, where the forces of nature are known for being rough!

For a bit of comfort, spend the night at the cosy Hustadvika Havhotell, which has a small spa and a hot sauna, and good food at Restaurant Flo.

After a 20-minute drive west, you'll reach the cosy fishing village of Bud, which was once one of the largest trading posts between Bergen and Trondheim in the 16th century.

Today, it's a sleepy fishing village, where you can enjoy good seafood at the Bryggjen i Bud restaurant, explore the remains of the German coastal fortifications from World War II at Ergan Coastal Fort, and visit the Coastal Museum.
